PS5 controller not charging - How to solve the problem
Your PS5 controller is not charging. You will notice this at the latest when your Ronaldo icon no longer moves in the direction of the opposing box. The simplest solution would of course be to connect the second controller directly. However, if you only have one gamepad for your PS5, here are some solutions so that you can use your PS5 controller again.
A common problem – PS5 controller won't charge
You can tell that your PS5 controller has given up the ghost if the controller does not light up yellow on both sides. If you are also plagued by this all too common problem, you have come to the right place. At this point, we offer you solutions to various common difficulties when loading a Playstation 5 controller and thus help you to solve the problem. It is best to try out the suggested solutions in chronological order!
Connection problems - The PS5 controller does not charge
If you have problems charging the PS5 controller, it is helpful to check the connections first. It's a good idea to use compressed air and small objects like paperclips to gently clean the ports if they become clogged with dirt.
Playstation software error – PS5 controller won't load
If there is a software error with the Playstation, you can fix it by turning off the Playstation and unplugging all the plugs. After a few minutes, you can plug it back in and turn the device back on. Sometimes a software update helps here. If everything works now, you know that this was the cause.
Software error on the controller
You can easily find out whether it is a software error on the controller itself by resetting the controller. You can do this by taking a paper clip and sticking it in the small black hole on the back of the controller for a few seconds. After a few more seconds, the controller should work again if the problem is here.
Difficulty charging the USB ports – The PS5 controller will not charge
There may be problems charging the USB ports in sleep mode. You can do the following to counteract this: Navigate from “Settings” to “System and power management” and then to “Features available in rest mode”. In the “USB port power supply” you can finally select “3 hours” or “always”. If the error is here, the problem should have been resolved at this point.
Only use genuine Sony products
Another reason for defects can be charging stations, cables or components in the controller itself that do not come from Sony. If you own one, it is worth exchanging it for original accessories or Sony spare parts.
Defective cable - The PS5 controller does not charge
Sometimes the USB-C cable is simply defective. In this case, it is advisable to try charging another electrical device with the cable first. If the other device also does not charge, you should use a new cable. Thus the problem should be solved. If the other device should charge, but the controller still does not, please try another suggested solution.
Power problems with the battery
Battery problems can often be the cause of charging difficulties. On the other hand, it helps to replace the battery. For this, you need a spare battery, clips, a spudger, a tray for the screws and a Phillips screwdriver.
First, the Playstation 5 controller must be turned off completely. To do this, you have to hold down the Playstation button for 10 seconds. Then carefully remove the black cover by inserting the spudger into the lower right and left end of the controller. Once that's done, you'll need to use the spudger to gently run along the edges toward the center to fully remove the cover. Be careful not to damage the small black tips above the analog sticks.
Removal of the L1 and R1 buttons is done afterwards, simply insert the flat end of a spudger into the gap between the L1 and R1 buttons and remove the top surface first. It is advisable to cover the button with one finger so that it does not jump away in a large arc when it is released.
Finally, you can easily remove the now released screws with a Phillips screwdriver - two screws are under the L1 and R1 buttons and two more screws are at the bottom of the controller. You can now place the four screws in the shell so that they don't get lost.
The lower controller is still held in place by two small plastic clips, which you can loosen with the clasps. To do this, simply insert the clasps into the clips and carefully turn them 90 degrees.
You can then remove the bottom cover of the controller, where you can clearly see the battery. It is connected to the circuit board on the right side with three cables. First, you have to lift the battery from the left and then carefully loosen the cables. Here you can carefully grab the end of the three cables and remove them with a strong jerk.
Then the spare battery is used. If necessary, remove it from the case and attach it with its cable connector in the place where the old battery was previously placed. The black cable must point upwards and the blue cable downwards. Then place the new battery exactly on the surface of the old battery and fasten the lower case.
Now you can do a function test by simply pressing the Playstation button on the controller. If everything works, you can reinstall the four screws, then also the L1 and R1 buttons and the black frame on the front. If the controller still doesn't work, you can try one of our other solutions.
Problems with other parts of the controller
If you have tried all of our solutions, it is likely that other parts of the controller are defective. Incorrect handling such as water damage or the controller falling from a certain height can be the reason for this. The only way to do this is to replace individual components in a repair shop, as it would be too expensive to buy individual components other than a battery.
